This document describes how to setup your machine to work with the CIT Dial-up Network.

How to get access to the School of Computing & IT Modem Pool

Go to the School's support page and click on Add Me to the CIT Modem List (or just click here). You'll be asked for your CIT username and password, and (providing everything works okay) you'll be added to the modem list. Once you've been added to the modem list, you will receive an email with the modem telephone numbers and instructions on how to setup your system to dial into the School of Computing & IT.

Dialup Network Information

CIT have installed two new modem pools, One based at Rydalmere, and the other at Kingswood. These new services have replaced the old CIT modem poolis, and have a different telephone numbers. Please do not call the old numbers - none of the old numbers will get you on to our systems, and some have already been reassigned to various places inside the University.

The new CIT modem pools, like the old ones, exist to aid CIT staff and students with their CIT work. The current modem pool restrictions on the web and other non-essential Internet based facilities for undergraduate students are also in place on the new modem pools (we are not an Internet Service Provider!). There is however a text based web browser available via the Unix hosts (Arthur and Gildas) called "lynx".

If you require less restricted access to the Internet, you should consider buying a modem account through ITS or a commercial Internet Service Provider. To buy a dial-in account from ITS see The Computer Shop on campus (Kingswood and Rydalmere).

Network Software Configuration

Setting up your PC to use the new modem pools is somewhat different to that of the old CIT dial-in service. Please read the following brief description about setting up your PC very carefully before you give it a go on your home computer.

NOTE:
The CIT laboratory assistants WILL NOT help you set up your home computer for dialing into CIT unless you follow ALL of the steps shown below. Yes, we do mean this.

Steps in configuring your home computer


    Open "My Computer" on your desktop.
    Open "Dial-Up Networking"
    Open "Make New Connection"
    In "Name of computer you're dialling"
        Enter A Name like "CIT Rydalmere" or "CIT Kingswood"
    Click on NEXT
    Area code: 02
    Telephone Number: 88333800  (Rydalmere)
                      47369000  (Kingswood)
    Country code: Australia (61)
    Click on NEXT
    Click on FINISH
That should be all you need to do. Remember to fill in your username and password correctly when you dial. If you have problems with this service, there are a few things you need to check:

    Open "My Computer" on your desktop.
    Open "Dial-Up Networking"
    With your RIGHT mouse button click on the "CIT Rydalmere"
	or "CIT Kingswood" icon.
    Select "Properties" from the menu that pops up.
    Make sure the phone number is correct.
    It is advisable to un-check
            Win 98: "Use area code and Dialling Properties"
            Win 95: "Use country code and area code"
    Click on CONFIGURE
    Click on the OPTIONS tab.
    Un-tick both the tick boxes that start as:
            "Bring up terminal window ......"
    Click on OKAY.
    Go to "Server Types"
    Make sure the "Type of Dial-Up Server:" is:
            PPP:.............
    In the "Advanced options:" section:
            Only have "Enable software compression" ticked
    In the "Allowed Network Protocols:" section:
            Only have "TCP/IP" ticked.
    Click on "TCP/IP Settings..."
    Select "Server assigned IP address"
    Select "Specify name server addresses"
    Enter 137.154.148.10 in the "Primary DNS" box.
    Click on "OKAY"
    Click on the "SCRIPTING" Tab (if you've got one)
            Make sure there is no script file specified.
    Click on "OKAY" to finish.

    If problems persist check the following:

    Open "My Computer" on your desktop.
    Open "Control Panel"
    Open "Network"

    In the configuration box you must have at least:
      "Dial-Up Adaptor" and "TCP/IP".
       If you don't have both of these you must install them.

       If you're missing "Dial-Up Adaptor" do the following:
           Select "add"
           Select "Adaptors" then "Add"
           In the left hand screen select "Microsoft"
           In the right hand screen select "Dial-Up Adaptor"
       If you're missing "TCP/IP", do the following:
           Select "add"
           Select "Protocols" then "Add"
           In the left hand screen select "Microsoft"
           In the right hand screen select "TCP/IP"

    Double click on "TCP/IP" or "TCP/IP -Dial-Up Adaptor"
    Click on the "IP Address" tab.
            Select "Obtain an IP address automatically"
    Click on the "WINS Configuration" tab.
            Select "Disable WINS Resolution"
    Click on the "Gateway" tab.
            Make sure there are no settings in there
    Click on the "DNS Configuration" Tab.
            Select "Disable DNS"
    Click on OKAY.
    Click on OKAY.

    At this point Windows will either ask you for your
    Windows 95/98 CD, or just ask you to reboot.
        

Notes about the CIT Dial-in Network

The new dial-in server CAN ONLY BE USED WITH PPP. You WILL NOT be able to use the old command line interface to Telnet as you could before. This means that you MUST install a web browser, a telnet client, and an e-mail client. These do actually exist on the standard Win 95/98 install, but if you're missing them, or looking for upgrades check out the CIT file archive.

If you have further troubles setting up your connection, as a last resort, call the CIT Help Desk on 02 47360773.

The last thing to check is which dial-in service you should use (Kingswood or Rydalmere). You are able to use either, but obviously it would be better to make sure that the one you use will be a local call for you, or if not, which would end up costing you less in STD calls.
