Global Integrated Supply Chain Systems: Analysis and Design

Editors:  Dr. Yi-chen Lan and Dr. Bhuvan Unhelkar

Introduction
With the evolution of the Internet Technology to Web Services, enterprises are able to operate quite comfortably both internally and externally, transcending geographical and time boundaries. Given the tremendous importance of the order fulfillment process and the costs associated with its logistics, global firms are bound to take the  opportunity to reengineer their supply chain operations to sustain themselves in a globalized market.  Contemporary literature on business processes abounds with analysis and discussions on the customer side of the business. However, it is equally vital to consider in greater details the supply side of globalized business processes as well. This currently edited work is focused on this vital, supply chain part, of the process. The rapidly evolving communication technologies are providing excellent opportunities for integration of processes and this book attempts to ensure that the supply chains are benefited from this integration. The end result will be a more comprehensive Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) than was previously achieved with technologies such as CORBA and DCOM. The competitive advantages derived in terms of reduced costs, achieving of timely supplies, and reduced inventories, are only a few in a long list of realizable benefits of SCM integration.

Overall objectives and mission of the proposed book
The focus in this book will be on the analysis and design requirement involved in the development and implementation of global integrated supply chain systems.
By surveying the literature in related fields, most discussions have been focused on the traditional operations and development of supply chain management systems. Nevertheless, there is a lack of apparent attention drawn for applying the latest information technologies to enhance the performance of integrated supply chain systems in the global context.
The book will document the technical and managerial aspects of global integrated global supply chain systems and provide insights into how the latest information technologies such as web services and mobile technology could be initiated and embedded to the integrated supply chain systems.
The book will also address the analysis and design aspects of the global integrated supply chain systems; what process improvement required to implement global integrated supply chain systems; and how organizations handle the challenges in the implementation phase.
The book is intended to convey a high-level understanding of analyzing, designing, and managing the global integrated supply chain systems. In this book we are particularly interested in exchanging concepts, new ideas, research results, experience and other related issues which could contribute to the academic arena and also benefit the corporate business community.

The target audience
The book will address a wide range of audience such as senior managers, IT planners, academics, researchers, practitioners and postgraduate students.
Specifically, this book will provide valuable information to executives and operational managers in the industry to play proactive role in global supply chain processes. Furthermore, serious higher degree students, Masters, PhD, as well as academic researchers and teachers, will find the “research base” of this book and the accompanying teaching structure quite attractive.
